Indonesia`s Bulog to export 50,000 tones of rice?
Asia Pulse, October 12, 2004
The State Logistics Agency (Bulog) plans to export 50,000 tons of rice to a numebr of African countries as the domestic market has an excess supply while the country has entered the peak of the harvesting season, a spokesman said.

"We will export 50,000 tons of rice and we have a clear picture of it their destinations," Bulog' Director Widjanarko Puspoyo said here after an inspection of the Jatinegara and Cipinang rice markets on Monday.

However, Widjanarko refused to give details on the rice exports' destination countries.

He said the rice to be exported would be taken from Bulog's old stocks. "We bave not released the old stocks (to the domestic market) because it would depress the current low rice price further," he said.

Widjanarko gave the assurance that the export would not disturb domestic supply because Bulog had separated supplies for export and domestic market.

"We should avoid a situation where rice export would sacrifice the national stock and create the risk of national stock fluctuation," he said.

Rice export, he added, should be seen as something normal in a situation where therse was a production surplus.

"We should consider (rice) export and import as usual trading practices. We should take the opportunity, including to export rice," Widjanarko said.

Currently, Bulog had 2.15 million tons of rice in its warehouses throughout the country. The volume was adequate for 12 months of routine distribution.

East Java had the largest stock , namely 628,000 tons, enough for routine distribution over a period of 20.55 months.
