China reportedly buys 700,000 tonnes of soft wheat from France
China has agreed to buy 700,000 tonnes of French soft wheat, French President Jacques Chirac said on Sunday, according to various news reports.

The sale marks the first major grain deal between the two countries for almost a decade.

Chirac, visiting China as part of efforts to boost trade with Beijing, gave few details but said during a debate, "We have signed an agreement for the export of 700,000 tonnes of French wheat," according to Muzi.com Lateline News.

Jean-Jacques Vorimore, head of France Export Cereales, said the order was worth about U.S.$150 million, but did not say when the delivery would be made, the news reports said.

French grain traders had expected the announcement from Chirac during his visit to China. The country's main export promotion group has already made two trips to China, taking samples of this year's harvest with them for analysis by Chinese buyers.

Many analysts expect China, the world's top wheat consumer, to increase its buying on world markets in the years ahead. Imports in 2004, put at some 7 million tonnes, are expected to rise to some 10 million next year.
