Total Egyptian rice exports during MY 2003/04 (Sept 15/2003) are estimated at 650,000 MT.
USDA
Total Egyptian rice exports during MY 2003/04 (Sept 15/2003) are estimated at 650,000 MT. Since the beginning of CY 2004, Egypt exported 365,352 MT of rice compared to 324,339 MT during the same period last year. This slight increase is mainly attributed to increased rice exports to Syria as a result of the barter trade agreement Egypt and Syria signed in November, 11, 2003

(EG4002). According to Egyptian rice traders, the average export price during MY 2003/04 was between $ 320 and $350 per MT /FOB for grade #2 (6 percent broken). Local trade is optimistic about the new crop which is due to arrive in the market next month. Rough rice prices are expected to decrease this year compared to last year due to increased production. In addition, recent reduction of import tariffs by the government (EG 4004) is expected to keep local prices low this year.

The Egyptian government does not maintain an official ban on paddy rice exports. However, the government maintains a long standing policy that encourages domestic milling in order to keep private sector and government-owned mills working. Paddy rice exporters are required to obtain an export license from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Industry after meeting stringent specification requirements. Egypt exported no paddy rice so far this year.
