Canadian Lentils and chickpea Stuation
Alberta Government
Yellow pea prices have jumped in the last few days, rebounding from harvest pressures. They are averaging $4/bu. Greens range from $4.25-$4.50 on average across Saskatchewan and Alberta. Reported feed prices have a fairly large range, from $3-$3.75 or $4/bu.

Yields are excellent. Southern Saskatchewan is reporting an average of 65 bu/ac and Southern Alberta anywhere from 35-50 bu/ac.

Analysts don’t expect the pea prices to rise even with the poor harvest conditions due to the sheer number of acres seeded and the phenomenal yields being recorded.

The other interesting news is in lentils. That crop is so sensitive to frost and with not very much harvested – estimates peg 75-90% of the crop to come in at a #2 or lower. We’ve seen a jump of 1-˝ cents per pound in the last few days, up to 18 cents per pound for Lairds and in some places, up to 19 cents for Estons since my last report. There are some reports of refusals to deliver on contracts and producer speculation that the price will rise even further. This is unlikely say the buyers as price conscious exporters will go elsewhere for their product.

Chickpeas have rebounded with the weather conditions as well. It is a bit early to tell how the frost and moisture have affected them. Kabulis are at 30-35 cents per pound for 10 mm and 24-30 for 9 mm and they are moving right now. Desis are steady at 11-12 cents per pound.

Mustard is flat to slightly bearish. Yellow is 15 cents per pound, oriental is 14 ˝ cents and brown, 14 cents per pound.

Canary seed has risen somewhat to 12 ˝ cents per pound.
