Land for Rice Cultivation Shrinks by 15,000 ha in Korea
Korea Times
The total area of land used for the rice cultivation has shrunk three years in a row as the figure fell by 1.5 percent again this year to mark the smallest amount since the government began tabulating the data in 1967.

The National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service (NAQS) on Monday announced that a total of 1 million hectares of land is being used for growing rice this year, down 14,900 ha from last year. The total peaked in 1987 with 1.26 million ha, but had decreased to 1.05 million ha by 1996. The area rose again to 1.08 million ha in 2001, but fell again to 1.05 million ha in 2002 and 1.02 million ha in 2003.

By field type, wet rice fields decreased 1.8 percent from last year to 983,600 ha, while dry rice fields increased 21.3 percent to 17,600 ha.

The rise in dry fields is attributed to an increase in glutinous rice cultivation due to rising prices, an NAQS official said.

By region, South Cholla Province has the largest area of rice fields with 204,401 ha, followed by South Chungchong Province with 168,336 ha and North Cholla Province with 146,598 ha. North Kyongsang Province is cultivating rice on land totaling 132,085 ha and Kyonggi Province on land amounting to 111,092 ha.

South Kyongsang Province has 93,869 ha of rice fields while North Chungchong Province has 55,232 ha. Kangwon Province and Inchon are growing rice on 43,838 ha and 16,478 ha, respectively.

In Seoul, 479 ha of rice fields remains.
