Japan gives 125,000 tons rice to N.Korea
Tokyo, Japan, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Japan has decided to donate 125,000 tons of rice, half of its earlier pledge, along with other humanitarian assistance to Pyongyang.

The plan was approved at a Cabinet meeting Thursday, the Mainichi Shimbun reported.

At his May summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi pledged 250,000 tons of food and $10 million worth of medical supplies to North Korea.

However, as Pyongyang is dragging its feet on investigating the whereabouts of ten Japanese believed to have been kidnapped by North Korea, Tokyo judged it prudent to initially extend only half of the amount in food aid and $7 million in medical supplies.

Japan is expected to provide the remainder of the promised aid later this year, depending on Pyongyang's implementation of the four-point Pyongyang Declaration signed in September 2002, which included the abduction inquiry.

This is Japan's first food aid to North Korea since October 2000, when the Koizumi government came under fire for spending over $900 million in aid to the country.
