Mozambique rice harvest was disappointing
Mozambique is facing a grain deficit of about 430,000 tons for the 2004-2005 agricultural year, despite an 11 percent growth in overall grain production in the 2004 harvest, local media reported Friday.
According to a report from Mozambique's agricultural authorities on the food stocks, the country produced 1.4 million tons of maize this year, a 14 percent increase over the 2003 figure.
Maize accounts for 70 percent of all grain grown in the country.
But the rice harvest was disappointing. At 118,000 tons, it declined by 7 percent from the 2003 figure. Mozambique's total rice needs are estimated at 449,000 tons a year.
As for wheat, although this crop is not grown in Mozambique, ofwhich some 315,000 tons of are consumed every year, thanks to urban residents' taste for bread and pasta.
Stocks at the start of the 2004/2005 agricultural year are 40,000 tons of rice and 60,000 tons of wheat.
The document adds that there is a maize surplus estimated at 85,000 tons, and a millet surplus of 30,000 tons. Therefore, in reality, the country is facing a grain deficit of about 430,000 tons for the agricultural year.
