Rice farmers say harvest is down
The Associated Press
LAFAYETTE, La.- With the rice harvest underway, rice farmers say yields are down this year because of heavy rains, disease, swings in temperature and a lack of sun.

"The harvest is going to be lighter than usual, it's disappointing," said Johnny Saichuk, a rice specialist with LSU Ag Center. "Last year was a record year. The year before that was a record year. This year won't be close."

There are more than 440,000 acres of rice statewide valued at more than $152 million, according to the LSU Ag Center.

Rice yields are off by about 300 pounds to 500 pounds an acre, Saichuk said.

Pat Reiners, an Acadia Parish farmer who lost some of his soybean crop this year, remained optimistic about salvaging much of his rice crop.

"It's still too early to tell how badly we were affected until we finish (the harvest)," he said. "It's not a big difference ... just a little off."

Farmer Bryan Leonards near Crowley said the hard rains hit at the critical time of pollination for the plants. LAFAYETTE, La.- With the rice harvest underway, rice farmers say yields are down this year because of heavy rains, disease, swings in temperature and a lack of sun.
