Leading CIS countries to jointly regulate grain market
RosBusinessConsulting Database, June 11, 2004
The agriculture ministers of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan plan to initiate the creation of a unified system for grain market regulation at a session of the Agrarian Industry Council of the CIS in the autumn of 2004 in Baku (Azerbaijan), Russian Agriculture Minister Alexey Gordeyev, who is the chairman of the CIS Agrarian Industry Council, declared at a round-table meeting in the Federation Council, devoted to the main aspects of the agrarian and food policies in Russia and other CIS countries.

According to the minister, the CIS countries have begun to understand the necessity of economic cooperation, including agricultural cooperation. He pointed out that representatives of Ukraine in the CIS Agrarian Industry Council had raised the question of coordination of efforts and creation of a joint regulatory system on the grain market for the first time, after Ukraine faced a grain problem last year.

Gordeyev pointed out that the four countries had come close to pursuing a policy envisaging coordination of efforts on the grain market with regard to prices, reserves and technical regulations, so as to finally achieve success on the world market in the long term.
