Moscow to keep buying grain from Kazahstan
RIA Novosti, June 09, 2004
The Russian capital intends to buy from Kazakhstan 340,000 tons of new grain, Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov, who is in Kazakhstan on the occasion of Moscow Days in Astana celebrations, said after a meeting with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

"Last year we turned to the president [of Kazakhstan] asking him to deliver hard wheats to provide for the production of high quality bread and pasta.

Kazakhstan met us halfway - we received 340,000 tons of wheat. This year we hope to get the same amount," Luzhkov said.

He noted that Kazakh wheat made it possible to "ensure stable provision of the city and conditions under which prices for bakery products were not growing too fast." The prices were "more reserved than in other parts of Russia," said the mayor.

"We asked Nursultan Nazarbayev to consider our proposal this year as well," Luzhkov said, explaining that Moscow intends to buy in Kazakhstan not only grain but also some 10,000 tons of meat. "We need to develop trade," Luzhkov said. He emphasized that "Moscow is always a bona fide partner, and pays for all its purchases without delays."
By the mayor's data, "Moscow-Kazakhstan trade turnover last year increased by 40%." This is a good growth, he believes, but it "does not correspond to the existing capabilities, and we should create conditions so that interaction in the sphere of economy is more enthusiastic." "This interaction should bear the nature of expanding ties in the field of science, high technologies, information systems, biotechnologies and machine-building," believes the Moscow mayor.
