Iraqi Grains Board Gets Visas
FarmPage
A key U.S. wheat leader said Thursday the State Department has finally issued visas for all members of an Iraqi Grains Board team to visit the United States, but U.S. wheat growers are now concerned about another issue that could affect the market for wheat in Iraq - the Australian government's decision to forgive a $413 million Iraqi debt to Australia for wheat purchases between 1987 and 1990.

U.S. Wheat Associates President Alan Tracy told DTN the issuance of the visas should make it possible for Iraqi wheat import officials to visit the United States soon.

U.S. wheat growers particularly want to talk to the Iraqis about their contract specifications, he said, which say wheat will be weighed and approved once it reaches Iraq.

Most U.S.-based trading companies find these terms unacceptable, Tracy said, though Cargill made a winning bid to supply wheat to Iraq. But Cargill officials have not said whether the wheat would come from the United States.

The Iraqi team was supposed to visit the United States last month, but the trip was delayed because all the visas had not been approved. The board has already visited Australia.
