Foodgrain production in India estimates reduce to nearly 210m tonnes
The Economic Times, June 6, 2004
Foodgrain production is lower by nearly 2m tonnes to 210.8m tonnes compared to earlier estimates, according to the Third Advance Estimates for crop production released by the government today.

The Second Advance Estimates released in February projected a production of 212.2m tonnes, buoyed by expectations of a copious monsoon. The production estimates are a whopping 10m tonnes below the target of 220m tonnes set for the year.

Production of coarse cereals, pulses, soyabean and groundnut among oilseeds are all either set to touch the targets set or have exceeded it.

Among foodgrains, wheat production (rabi) has been pegged at 72.7m tonnes, which is way below the ’03-04 target of 78m tonnes, but far higher than the final estimate of 65m tonnes for ’02-03. Interestingly, the NDA government had down-gauged production estimates from a whopping 79m tonnes initially to a far lower 73m tonnes.

Pulses, too, spell good news and are among the few crops where production has almost met the set target for the year. Estimates peg production at 14.9m tonnes as compared to a target of 15m tonnes, which is 4m odd tonnes above the production in the previous year. Good news also reigns on the coarse cereals front with current estimates pegging production at nearly 39m tonnes.
