US Corn weekly inspection report
CBOT, June 2, 2004
Our first reports of the post holiday started with Tuesdays 10:00 am central time weekly export inspection report showing 32.9 m.b. of corn was inspected for near term export, off from 38.7 the week prior but over a year ago of 29.9 year to date inspections are 1.365 b.b. versus 1.097 a year ago. It's a friendly demand signal. The crop is now emerged from the ground with 68% in good to excellent condition down from 71% the week prior but equal a year ago. Traders returned after the holiday with a lot of cash on hand from pre holiday liquidation and saw holiday rains that were far greater than expected lending thought that flooded low lying land wont be reseeded as the preferred planting time ended June 1. Iowa was in the worst shape with up to 1.5 m.a. under water. This gave us a 20 cent rally Tuesday. Calmer heads prevailed Wed. with a tighter range. Its more probable than not we will see less acres planted than our March acreage report suggested but its not what you plant but what you grow. You can plant 1 million more off bad weather and yields so, the market will digest this wet may planting issues and refocus on what's in the ground. We look dry into Friday with more rain this weekend. We look to be out of the extreme wet pattern and if more normal rainfall prevails in June we could pull back to fill the gap on the charts back to 3.07 on July, 3.02 on Sept. and 3.00 basis Dec. On a close over 3.22 basis Dec. we could push to 3.40 quickly. This should accrue only if more weather problems arise. Look for a June drop in prices to buy Dec. for our July thru August growing season when an extended dry pattern could a rise similar to last year.
