Thailand Weekly Rice Price Update
USDA, May 11, 2004
Thailand Indicative Price: Export (FOB) Prices for various grades of rice (USD/M.T.): F WR !00 B - $ 503.-, WR 100 B - $ 241.-, PB 5% - $ 256.-, WR 5% - $ 235.-, WR 10% - $ 231.-, WR 15% - $ 228.-, WR 25% - $ 225.-, WR 35% - $ 223.-, A 1 SUP - $ 218.-, A 1 SPEC - $ 216.-.

Export prices for most grades of rice continued to decline in response to the weakening Thai Baht and sluggish fresh demand. The Thai Baht depreciated further to the eight-month low at around 40.50 Baht/US dollar, as compared to an average of around 40.00 Baht/US dollar in the previous week. Also, trade sources reported that foreign buyers are reluctant to make a deal, following the current price uncertainty. However, the current domestic supply remained tight, as the sell-off in the government stock is limited only to one exporter. In addition, the new proposal of the Thai Commerce Minister for rice importation of about 1.5 million tons from neighboring countries (Burma, Cambodia, and Loa) at a zero tariff rate (under the Economic Cooperation Strategy, or ECS) for re-export remains controversial among farmers, millers, exporters, and politician. At the moment, domestic rice prices in these countries are reportedly surging in response to this proposal.

Unofficial exports (excluding fragrant rice) for May 3-9, 2004 totaled 157,567 tons, down 72 tons from the previous week’s total and up 14,738 tons from the four-week moving average of 142,829 tons. Exports during Jan. 1 – May 4, 2004 totaled 2,271,762 tons, compared with 1,446,384 tons during the same period in 2003.

According to the Department of Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce, total rice exports (including fragrant rice) during Jan. 1- Apr. 27, 2004, amounted to 2,766,996 tons, up 36 percent from 2,048,790 tons in the previous year.
