Demand lifts exports of rice
The Nation, May 7, 2004
Thailand's rice exports increased significantly in April in terms of both value and volume thanks to rising demand in major markets, particularly China and Africa.

Rice export volume reached 800,000 tonnes in both March and April, Rachane Potjanasuntorn, director general of the Foreign Trade Department, said yesterday.

The value of rice exports in April grew 60 per cent year-on-year to US$214 million or Bt8.41 billion, while volume jumped 49 per cent to 800,000 tonnes. However, April exports saw a slight drop of 3 per cent in volume and 2 per cent in value compared with the previous month.

Total rice exports in the first four months of the year reached 2.88 million tonnes worth $758 million or Bt29.59 billion, an increase of 34 per cent in volume and 49 per cent in value year-on-year.

Of rice shipments in the four-month period, Jasmine rice accounted for 760,000 tonnes - up 26 per cent on year - worth $308 million or Bt11.98 billion, up 41 per cent.

Rachane said jasmine rice exports increased largely due to higher demand from China. The export price is now quoted at $548 per tonne, up $73, while 100-per-cent white rice B grade is quoted at $242 per tonne, up by $44 from the same period last year.

"We offer an attractive export price. The quoted export price is no different from that of our export rivals and demand is still high in our export markets," he said.

As a result, the local paddy price for jasmine rice is quoted at Bt9,750 per tonne, an increase of Bt2,167 from the price quoted this time last year. One-hundred-per-cent white paddy rice B grade is also enjoying higher prices, quoted at Bt5,250 per tonne, up Bt700 per tonne from last year.

Rachane said major rice-importing countries included South Africa, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Iraq, Iran, Nigeria and China. China, traditionally an importer of jasmine rice, is now purchasing other kinds of rice as well, he said.

Last month, Thailand won 3,000 bidding lots for sticky rice opened by the Taiwanese government. The successful bid came after the two governments reached an agreement on Thai export standards.
