Philippine Govt sets standard for local corn
Asia Pulse, May 5, 2004
The government has formulated natural standard for local corn that would firmed up quality corn grades in a bid to eliminate barriers in tracing. The formula guides farmers, millers, traders, retailers, integrators and stakeholders in the corn industry, said Agriculture Sectary Luis Lorenzo Jr.

"For the first time in many years, we now have a standard for corn that is recognized internationally and attuned to world class requirement," he said.
Lorenzo said the National Food Authority (NFA) was initially responsible for formulating the Philippine National Standard for shelled corn under the classification as early as 2002.

But the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Product Standard (BAFPS) reformed the text of the standards to match guidelines set by the Bureau of Products Standard of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

To conform it to international requirements, the government adjusted the standard for corn, notably on the levels of aflatoxin in view of the increasing concern for consumer,s health protection and fair practice in international trade, Lorenzo said.

The setting of standard for local corn comes amid reports that farmers in Mindanao are planning to export their surplus corn production to Malaysia and South Korea in the third quarter of 2004 to protect their income even at the peak of harvest, he said.
