Philippines' NFA to import Viet rice?
Asia Pulse, April 29, 2004
The National Food Authority here has plans of importing at least 120,000 bags of rice from Vietnam to ensure a steady supply until the end of the year.
But such plans cannot be realized because of an existing resolution by the provincial board banning the entry of imported rice in the province.

Ed Fuentebella, an official of NFA-South Cotabato, bared a possible shortage of rice supply in South Cotabato as indicated by a rise in prices of palay.

He said they already have asked the provincial government to lift the ban "so we could start the importation."
Private traders buy palay at P11 per kilo, while NFA procures at P10.50, prompting farmers to sell their produce to the former.

Presently, Fuentebella said, NFA has a reserve stock of 11,000 bags of palay and 4,000 bags of rice, just a little over required buffer stock of 10,000 bags.

Rey Salvatierra, NFA South Cotabato manager, said over the weekend that rice stocks are already fast depleting due to the limited harvests over the past few months brought about by massive pest infestation since last year.

He said that some 11,300 bags of NFA rice have been sold to the different local government units affected by the tungro virus and rat infestation in the last three months.
