Thailand - Paddy supply will soon dried
Thailand, April 22, 2004
Last week the Thai market was completely at a halt for the celebration of the Thai New Year.

This week begins with a firmer tune compared with the last closing. Loading and trading momentum started to pick up. Paddy supply will soon dried out and the drought situation is becoming more worrisome.

Export prices for most grades of rice continued to decline slightly, but remained high. Trade sources reported that rice shipment slowed down, as loading activities are currently constrained by limited supplies of lighter, delivering rice from exporters’ warehouses to vessels. Trade sources foresee higher prices in anticipation of fresh demand in the next couple of weeks. The official estimate of second crop production has been revised downward to 5.7 million tons of paddy (3.8 million tons milled equivalent) from the previous estimate of 5.9 million tons, due to a low level of water in most reservoirs. However, total rice production in MY 2003/04 is pegged at 26.6 million tons of paddy (17.6 million tons milled equivalent), as opposed to 26.1 million tons of paddy (17.2 million tons milled equivalent) in MY 2002/03. Trade sources reported that this revision of the second crop production is too marginal to be concerned.

Unofficial exports (excluding fragrant rice) for Apr. 12-18, 2004 totaled 92,426 tons, down 35,403 tons from the previous week’s total and down 39,530 tons from the four-week moving average of 131,956 tons. Exports during Jan. 1 – Apr. 18, 2004 totaled 1,795,001 tons, compared with 1,180,995 tons during the same period in 2003.

According to the Department of Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce, total rice exports (including fragrant rice) during Jan. 1- Mar. 31, 2004, amounted to 2.1 million tons, up 29 percent from the same period in the previous year.
