Banaybanay to remain as chief source of IR64 rice
Mindanao Times(Philippines), April 3, 2004
Banaybanay town will be maintained as a production area of IR64 or the 7-tonner rice variety. Department of Agriculture regional executive director Roger Chio said Banaybanay farmers want to preserve the 7-tonner variety because the municipality has established its name as the main source of the rice strain. National Food Authority (NFA) administrator Arthur Yap in his recent visit to the area was impressed with Banaybanay as a top rice producer of the region.

He said the municipality is also a laboratory for certified seeds.

In his visit last month, he said the town will be a recipient of modern facilities that will augment its production capacity.

The NFA, he said, will embark on a modernization program costing P1.65 billion.

Yap noticed in his recent ocular in Banaybanay town that investors have started to locate in the area.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has been encouraging processors of agricultural products to locate their facilities near production sites in order to allow farmers easy access to the market.

DA Secretary Luis Lorenzo Jr. said the government is keeping its target of achieving 97 percent self -sufficiency in rice this year with projected palay production of 14.9 million metric tons (MT).

In an earlier report Lorenzo projected that palay production this year would exceed last year’s yield of 13.5 million MT by intensifying the GMA Rice Program.
