CP working on high-yielding 'super' white rice strain
The Nation, April 2, 2004
Sumeth Pinyosnit, area president (Thailand) of the Crop Integration Business Group, CP's rice subsidiary, said yesterday that the company also expected to export the rice strain, which is still in the development phase.

He said the hybrid seeds, which the company had so far spent four years researching, generated much higher production per rai but the price per pack would also be about 10 times higher than normal seeds.

Once the development process is complete, CP will reveal the method for growing the rice to its contracted farmers and would buy back the yields, he said.

"Currently, each rai generates 416 kilograms of rice but with the new breed developed by CP the productivity of each rai will increase to 2,000 kilograms," Sumeth said.

He said CP would initially develop the breed so it could be grown in the central provinces.

CP had spent Bt20 million annually on developing the seed, he said, adding that the company would name the breed at a later date.

Sumeth said CP hoped the breed would make the company the No-1 player in the market while also giving it a competitive edge overseas.

Also yesterday, the Crop Integration Business Group signed a two-year exclusive distribution contract with CP Seven Eleven Plc.

Under the contract, the company's Buamongkut packed rice brand will become the exclusive packed rice for 7-Eleven convenience stores nationwide.

Seven Eleven sold 6,000 tonnes of the Buamongkut brand last year. It expects sales to increase 10 per cent this year.

Sumeth said his company spent Bt30 million to Bt40 million a year on marketing promotions with Seven Eleven.

There are several types of Buamongkut rice including brown, jasmine, white and glutinous.

The Crop Integration Business Group has three other packed-rice brands: Iyara, Buathip and Thipthong.

It produced a total of 70,000 tonnes of packed rice last year.

The total rice market in Thailand was worth Bt16 billion for the 800,000 tonnes produced last year.

Seven Eleven currently has 2,514 branches. It expects that number to grow to 3,000 by next year.
