Italian Cereal Product Imports down in Y/Y 2003

Italian cereal product imports in 2003 decreased by 2. 4 pct in terms of volume, while exports fell by 10. 1 pct, compared to 2002, Italian National Cereal Association (ANACER) said on March 23, 2004.

Net foreign currency balance in the sector stood at 235. 2 mln euro ($ 290. 6 mln) versus 81. 9 mln euro ($ 101. 2 mln), ANACER added.

Imports in 2003 totalled 10. 59 million tonnes, down from 10. 85 million tonnes in 2002. In terms of value imports increased by 18. 1 mln euro ($ 22. 37 mln).


Imports of soft wheat registered a drop of 1. 07 million tonnes due to reduced imports from Russia, Ukraine and Hungary in spite of the 1. 19 million tonnes rise in quantities imported from EU countries. Imports of durum wheat registered an increase of 346, 000 tonnes.
Fodder imports rose by 26 pct. Maize and sorghum registered an increase of 237, 000 tonnes and 235, 000 tonnes respectively. A slight rise was registered in the imports of processed products and substitutes, up 8, 000 tonnes, of manioca, up 12, 700 tonnes, and of fodder cereals, up 5, 000 tonnes. Imports of rice dropped by 19, 000 tonnes, down 18. 3 pct year-on-year.

Exports of Italian cereal products in 2003 totalled 3. 4 million tonnes worth 1. 681 bln euro ($ 2. 078 bln), down 10. 1 pct in terms of volume and 7. 4 pct in terms of value. Grain exports dropped by 147, 000 tonnes due to decreased quantities of exported maize and soft wheat, down by 125, 000 tonnes and 39, 000 tonnes respectively, and in spite of a rise in durum wheat exports by 33, 000 tonnes.

Exports of soft wheat flour dropped by 10. 2 pct due to decreased quantities exported to Libya and Yemen, down by 77, 000 tonnes and 45, 000 tonnes respectively. Exports to Cuba and Iraq saw a rise by 34, 000 tonnes and 40, 000 tonnes respectively.

In 2003 foreign trade in Italian cereal sector generated 1. 681 bln euro ($ 2. 078 bln) revenue compared to 1. 816 bln euro ($ 2. 244 bln) in 2002. Total currency disbursement stood at 1. 916 bln euro ($ 2. 368 bln) versus 1. 898 bln euro ($ 2. 346) in 2002.
