Wheat - weekly export inspection report
CBOT, March 19, 2004
Wheat started Monday with our inspection report showing 26.9 m.b. up from 12 a year ago and 20.4 last week. It is a good demand signal. Thursday's weekly export sales report came in at 419 t.t. sold last week down from 589 the week prior. It is not bearish but more neutral to pricing. Next week's report will come in higher as this week saw a surprise sale to Egypt for 120 t.t. The United Nations tendered to buy 600 t.t. on the world market to ship to Iraq. It is more probable than not we will get most of that business after liberating that country. So, demand is looking supportive into early next week. Warmer and drier than normal weather in our hard red winter wheat looks to keep crop ratings from improving on Monday's state by state updates. This also looks to keeps breaks minimal. sees very little rain in our hard red winter wheat states next week. On Monday, go to his site first thing to get an update. Wheat is 90% about weather and its impact on emerging winter wheat and its 31 million acres with states of most interest being Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska. Current state crop ratings are showing very poor numbers after a generally dry winter leaving subsoil depleted. Last year on March 31st the nation's winter wheat rating showed 51% of the crop was in good to excellent condition. This week's ratings for Kansas our number one wheat producer was 32% and Texas 28%. So, we are starting in the hole here. Buy July wheat near support of 3.88 with a 3.80 may put for protection and gamble dry weather will persist.
