Iraqi Trade Ministry to visit U.S. Rice Industry; WFP to stop their activities in Iraq?
Rice Databank
The USA Rice Federation is helping to organize a visit to the U.S. rice industry of key members of the Iraqi Trade Ministry this spring. The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture has now formally invited the Iraqi officials and once the composition of the team is finalized, the visa process will begin. Obtaining travel visas could take as long as eight weeks so we would expect the team to visit the U.S. in mid- May. The mission will be jointly funded and coordinated by the Cochran Fellowship Program, the U.S.
USA Rice Federation and the U.S. Rice Producers Association and is a follow-up to the successful meeting with Iraqi Ministry and Grain Board officials in Amman, Jordan in late February.

Larry Senger, USDA’s representative to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq recently reported that WFP’s role as the procurer of food grains for Iraq will end soon.
Beginning April 1, the Ministry of Trade will be responsible for its own grain and foodstuff procurement. It has already let tenders for rice Within the next approximately six weeks, MOT is expected to tender for a total of 480,000 mt of rice with deliveries to occur before July 31, the date by which MOT would like to have three-month buffer stocks of these food grains in storage in Iraq. Once these, and the WFP food grains begin to arrive, bottlenecks will likely occur at entry points. Trucks in which to transport grain to storage facilities from Umm Qasr, Iraq’s main port, and from overland points of entry into Iraq, are also in short supply.
