Philippines' Cotabato province may lift imported rice ban
BusinessWorld, March 19, 2004
The provincial government of South Cotabato, a major grains producer, would likely lift a ban on imported rice imposed two years ago through a provincial board resolution.
South Cotabato Governor Daisy Avance Fuentes told reporters this came after provincial officials said a decline in local production is likely to happen due to the continuing pest infestation on rice farms.

"We need to position the entry of imported rice to meet the foreseen deficit in our food requirement," Ms. Fuentes said. But she did not say the volume of imported rice the province would need to ensure buffer stocks during the lean months. She said the volume would depend on the local palay production from May to June. Last week, the province was put under a state of calamity due to pest infestation that already wrought damage to agricultural crops amounting to P71 million.

The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist earlier reported that pests, particularly rodents and corn plant hoppers, have destroyed some 2,600 hectares of corn and palay farms in the province.
