Pakistani Rice Millers & Traders oppose import of Indian rice
The Pakistan Newswire, March 15, 2004
Sindh-Balochistan Rice Millers & Traders' Association Monday criticized the Rice Exporters' Association of Pakistan alleging that REAP is bent on turning Pakistan into a rice-importing country. Pakistan had always exported the rice but now a REAP delegation visiting India was in the deal to buy about 500,000 tons of coarse rice PR-106 despite the fact that 7,50,000 tons of IRRI-6 rice were lying here in the warehouses of Sindh and Balochistan and hardly 3,60,000 tons have so far been exported, Gada Hussain Mahesar, president, SBRMTA, said addressing a press conference here today. Importing rice from India would ruin the rice growers and other people associated in the trade here besides deprive the country millions of dollars earned through export of rice, Mahesar viewed. Terming it a conspiracy to harm Pakistani rice exports, he said Pakistani coarse rice was getting the rate of US$ 238 per metric ton FBO that is much higher than the Indian rice and added that the growers and rice industry of Pakistan would have to suffer a heavy blow with negative indulgence of REAP. Mr. Mahesar said the imported Indian rice would be sold in the name of Pakistani rice to earn a few dollars more but that would bring bad name for the country. He urged the federal commerce minister to take serious note of the situation as the delegation visiting India had deviated from the actual purpose of its visit. The REAP delegation had only to study the working of power-boiling machinery of rice for introducing the same in Pakistan as these plants were needed here for pre-cooked or known as Joshi Chawal here.
