Uzbekistan`s grain exports in 2004
Grain Databank
Uzbekistan plans to export more than 500,000 tons of grain this year, according to a source at state grain company Uzdonmakhsulot. The country exported more than 150,000 tons of grain in the first two months of the year, through the Foreign Economic Relations Agency, he said. Grain is being shipped in small batches to Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and Azerbaijan.
In response to last year’s record harvest, Uzbekistan lifted a ban on grain exports at the end of 2003 that had been in place since the initial years of Uzbekistan’s independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The first exports of Uzbek grain were shipped in December. To protect local grain producers, the country
imposed a 30 percent import duty on flour in January. There was previously a zero import duty on flour.
Uzbekistan harvested 6.262 million tons of grain, including rice and corn, in 2003, up 8.1 percent from 5.792 million tons in 2002, the government statistics department reported. Production increased to 5.612 million tons of wheat, from 5.183 million tons in 2002; and to 311,200 tons of rice, from 185,600 tons; but fell to 164,800 tons of barley, from 235,500 tons; to 142,900 tons of grain maize, from 147,100 tons; and to 31,400 tons for other crops, from 41,400 tons.
