Corn report
CBOT, March 10, 2004
March 10 and the markets are closed. The U.S.D.A. came out with their monthly crop report. They left our corn carryover stocks at 901 m.b. versus 1.087 b.b. a year ago. Our carry over is the amount of grain expected to be left over at the start of our next harvest. It's our savings account against a poor new crop growing season. They left world ending stocks in the 67 m.m.t. area and left our export projections unchanged but up 26% over a year ago. The corn report was a real yawner. This leaves corn to struggle with a overbought chart pattern, and a heavy long position by funds. The next big report is March 3 when the U.S.D.A. projects acres to be planted. Needless to say, 3.00 corn means more acres going to seed. If corn is going to 3.25 or higher it will be on growing problems with this years crop to planted starting late April. Sept. corn has support at 2.88 then 2.82. Buy Sept. corn around support and buy the May 2.85 put for insurance and hold thru the growing season. Near term is set for a correction but long term is certain to deal us a uneven growing season and a weather premium rally to profit from. Tight ending stocks will leave little room for error in our growing season
