Viet Nam considers cessation of signing rice export contracts
Vietnam Agency, March 7, 2004
Food businesses should consider an option of temporarily ceasing to sign rice export contracts which order shipments before June, said Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on Friday. Dung gave the suggestion at a meeting on rice exportation and the rice market in the first quarter of this year. He said the agricultural input costs increased in late 2003 and the first two months of 2004, causing a surge in the prices of unprocessed and processed rice. Situation has driven some businesses to struggle for the purchase of rice from farmers, causing the Mekong Delta rice market develop complicatedly, the senior Government official explained his suggestion. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development should scrutinise the rice market so as to balance the supply and demand for the first six months and the whole year of 2004, said Dung. He also asked the ministry to work with the Food Businesses Association to make sound instruction for businesses in transaction and signing export contracts with foreign partners in the months to come. Efforts should be made to balance the market, thus ensuring no shortage of rice due to exportation as well as the effective marketing of farmers' products, the Deputy Prime Minister concluded.
