Wheat - Weekly reviev
CBOT, March 5, 2004
Monday began with our weekly export inspection report showing 29.5 m.b. were inspected for near term export up from 15.4 the week prior. This came as prices were generally lower the week prior attraction some demand. Thursdays weekly export sales report showed 562 t.t. were sold for shipment before June 1 versus 415 the week prior. It's a slightly friendly number on the surface but 190 t.t. were to China and were new that due to last weeks announcement of their purchase. The hard red winter wheat belt states from Texas to Kansas saw massive moisture this week after a winter of very dry conditions. Topsoil moisture looks to be greatly replenished as Texas breaks dormancy and Kansas gets ready to break winters long dormancy period. This was bearish for wheat prices this week. The private weather site WXRISK.COM sees into Thursday mainly dry conditions. He looks to the period of March 12 to 18 as being mainly warm and drier than normal. This may lend some support. The demand side remains troubling now, while weather is more important long term. 3.73 was major support on May futures into today's close. Charts say a close under 3.73 and 3.64 is next stop then major support at 3.60. Buy the 3.65 April put option for 5 or 6 cents now and buy the May futures on a dip to 3.64 and gamble on the futures that dry weather could return on the futures that dry weather could return to the western plains wheat states.
