Farmers and rice exporters will garner large profit this year
Vietnam Economy, February 18, 2004
January rice exports plummeted to 30,000 tonnes compared to last January’s 284,000 tonnes and only earned US$4 million.

However, in a recent report, deputy trade minister Mai Van Dau forecasted optimistically that Vietnamese farmer and rice exporters will garner large profits this year.

The global market demand would increase, he said, even though some major markets, like Indonesia and Philippines had already announced it will reduce imports in an effort to revive their domestic rice industry.

Already, Saigon Port reported that the export price for Vietnam’s high quality 5 percent broken rice has increased from $197-198 last week to between $200 and $202 per ton FOB.

Twenty-five percent broken rice climbed to $182-$185 per ton from $178-$180 last week and $175 two weeks ago. However, he said, Vietnamese rice exporters would have difficulty anticipating price fluctuations that could impede their ability to set reasonable prices.

Vietnam is now the second largest global rice exporter, after Thailand.

The Ministry of Trade expects in 2004, the country will export 3.5 million tonnes of rice for a total earning of $700 million, which is 500,000 tonnes less than in 2003.
