Wheat - Weekly review
CBOT, February 13, 2004
Monday's wheat reports started with the weekly export inspection report showing 21.1 m.b. were inspected for near term export up from 20.2 the week prior and 15.4 a year ago. It's not a bad number but the lower prices the week prior should have given us a better number. The U.S.D.A. crop report put our carry over stocks for the start of our June 1 marketing year at 534 m.b. down from 559 the month prior. They did this by raising our export projection. World wheat ending stocks were put at 126 m.m.t. down from 127.3 last month and 165 a year ago. It's was friendly for prices Tuesday but the market refocused on near term demand Wed. The weekly export sales report Thursday showed 340 t.t of wheat was sold last week off from 545 the week prior and 47% under the four week average. Though current demand remains soft, the market spent this week getting ready ahead of the visit to Washington this weekend to discuss a long term wheat purchase agreement by the Chinese. The thinking is we could come back next week and ahead of the open hear of a large near term delivery purchase. To sustain strength we need to have some o9f the purchase to be for old crop delivery before June 1. China has said its 2004-05 production could be a 20-year low. March options expire Friday Feb. 20. Buy the March 3.80 put for 3 cents or 150 dollars for 4 days protection and buy the May futures with a 3.80 stop close only order.
