Wheat – Weekly review
CBOT – Jan 23, 2004
Tuesday started with our weekly export inspection report showing 25.7 m.b. were inspected for near term export up from 22.7 the week or and up 117 m.b. on the year. Thursday weekly export sales report showed 1.080 m.t. of wheat was sold last week up from 324 t.t. the week prior. This was expected as we knew China`s 1 m.t. purchase last week would show up on this report. Wednesday saw a 105 t.t. sale to China and word the Chinese trade delegation would visit Washington Feb. 15. They look to negotiate a long term wheat purchase for 2004. So, we may see some more hand to mouth purchases before then. Demand on the year is great with sales 40% over a year ago. This is what brought us to over 4.00 on 5 separate dates, but as we have noted, every time we trade over 4.00 demands goes away and prices break sharply. We hit a high on March wheat of 4.04 Tues. and sold off. I gave 4.02 as major resistance. Wheat was pushing 3.80 at mid session today so, our downside selling advice worked. The problem with near term demand is Australia is now selling their crop and are capturing about 35% of our business. Sales have gone from great to only good. If were luckily we will pull back to next support of 3.77 area at which time I will look to buy long with stops under 3.70 and look for a rally by mid week as arctic cold hits our winter wheat states.
