Grain sumery
CBOT - Jan 22, 2004
January 22, 2004 and the markets are closed. Wednesday turned into a wild day for grains especially beans and corn. Corn and beans started lower with beans pushing 8-cents down before sellers turned big buyers on rumor that the secretary of agriculture at senate hearings might announce a ban on animal parts into the feed ration for hogs and chickens. This feeding practice was banned in the cattle industry in 1997 to prevent the spread of mad cow disease. Traders bought the futures heavily pushing beans up 12 to 14-cents on the thinking soymeal and corn would replace banned feed ingredients. What came out of the meeting was a statement that the government would decide to ban or not ban this feeding practice very soon. This could mean 2-days or 20-days. This kept traders from adding on to their longs today but also told traders do not be short this market as the governmnet makes these announcements before or after the close of trading and a short position could be facing a 10 to 20-cent higher call for the opening any day now. No one knows what the governmnet will do. We know that hog and chicken feeders would have to turn to much more expensive feed practices if the ban occures but that surely would be passed on the consumer. The cattle industry is far more threatened as almost 4-billion dollars in beef exports are on hold as foreign importers await word as to how the US will change feeding practice feeding practices to insure mad cow will not be imported in. Hog and chicken operations can start up quickly but a failed cattle operation is gone forever. The market believes the government has no choice but to rule on a ban, but when. Avoid the short side of beans and sell only to take profits. The weekly export sales report comes out Friday at 7:30a.m. Central Time and I will post my weekly review after Friday's close.
