Russian minister reiterates plans to raise 2004 grain output
Prime-Tass Business News Agency 2004, January 19, 2004
MOSCOW,- The main target for Russia's agricultural sector this year will be increasing grain output, Deputy Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister Alexei Gordeyev reiterated Monday at a meeting of President Vladimir Putin with key ministers, the Kremlin's press service said.
Gordeyev said the rise in grain production is needed because of higher world prices. 'We should follow the world market indications, and increase grain production,' he said.

Gordeyev said the government would encourage farmers to expand the planted area this spring, and help in providing the required volumes of mineral fertilizers.

The government targets to raise the spring grain area to compensate for a drop in the winter grain area, which amounted to 10.3 million hectares at the start of December 2003, or 13.6% less than a year before.

Russia's grain output declined last year to around 67.2 million tonnes in clean weight, down from 86.6 million in 2002. The decline was due to a lower planted area and less favorable weather conditions.

Russia emerged as a big grain exporter in the 2002-03 marketing year (July-June), shipping abroad around 17 million tonnes of grain. In July-December, exports amounted to around 6 million tonnes.

Gordeyev said earlier that Russia is potentially able to produce up to 110 million tonnes of grain annually. A grain production increase is especially important due to the emergence of new customers, such as India and China, Gordeyev said.
