Corn - Weekly Report
CBOT - Jan 16, 2004
Corn started the week with our monthly U.S.D.A. crop report putting are final production number for 2003 at 10.114 b.b. versus 9.008 the year prior. They lowered our carry over stocks for the start of next years harvest and marketing year to 981 m.b. off from 1.086 b.b. the year prior and 318 m.b. under pre report trade estimates. This supply side change to a much tighter stocks situuation says the downside is limited but the upsice is determined by demand and that's what we will watch for now. World carryover stocks came in at 67.5 m.t. versus 100 m.t. the year prior. This further makes U.S. stocks in a position to move lower as the world turns to the U.S. to fill needs from short falls else where. Thursdays weekly export sales report came in showing 839 t.t. of corn was sold last week up from 418 on the holiday shortened week the week prior. The key was that Asia was in for 527 t.t. as they garner U.S. corn they cant get from China. China looks to be absent from the export market as stocks there are very tight. March corn has support at 2.63 then the bottom of the chart gap 2.53. Buy dips and a 2.60 March put option for insurance once filled in the futures. Don't forget markets are closed Mondays.
