CBOT - Corn report
Monday Jan 5 and the markets are closed. We started with our weekly export inspection report showing 33.8 m.b. were inspected for near term export down from 36 the week prior and four week average of 40 m.b year to date inspections are 639 m.b. versus 527 a year ago. The number for the week is friendly even though lower as last week was a shortened holiday week with one less export day. Corn traded in a narrow range both sides of unchanged. As we look ahead this week we have several friendly issues looking to support corn. One, it appears mad cow fear has subsided and the increase in hog numbers on last weeks hog and pig report look to more than off set any loss in cattle numbers to be fed as a result of any further mad cow issues. Two, we face the coldest week of the year in cattle states suggesting more corn feed will be required to keep cattle weights up as weight losses in freezing temperatures are common. the private weather site sees another dry week in Argentinas corn regions. This could be important if it continues into months end as it's their summer there. Thirdly, next Monday is our monthly U.S.D.A. crop report. The perception is the government will lower the carry over stocks number or ending stocks to factor in better exports to Asian countries as China steps out of the export market to surrounding Asian nieghbors and becomes a buyer of corn for the first time in two years. This all should lead to buyers and dips. Consider buying March corn on lower opening and buying a Feb. 2.50 put option for 5 cents or 250 dollars for protection near term.
