Rice exports achieve bumper crop this year
Vietnam has exported more than 40 million tonnes of rice to 70 countries around the world since 1989, earning US$8 billion.

This year, rice exporters have reaped bumper crops for three consecutive years. The State has not had to cover their deficit, as they now contribute to the tax budget from their profits.
Vietnamese rice is now available world wide, and accounts for 12-15 percent of the market share. The country is not only committed to food security but also has become the world’s second largest rice exporter.

However, the quality of the rice exported is not high. High quality rice usually brings higher benefit to exporters and farmers, therefore, raising rice quality is important for four sectors (farmers, scientists, enterprises and management).
In 2000, the government began a programme to develop higher quality rice and expand cultivation areas to over one million ha by 2005. In the past three years four provinces in Mekong Delta Region: An Giang, Can Tho, Dong Thap and Kien Giang, have yielded the largest output through planting multipliable strains. These provinces have invested thousands of millions of dong, to improve rice quality.

In the past two years, in the global market, there has been no major gap between Vietnamese and Thai rice. Sometimes their prices are equal, showing that Vietnamese rice quality has improved. Mr Ta Minh Son, owner of Tu Son Company said, "In early 1990, when launching a programme to improve rice quality, I thought of developing An Giang’s rice trademark".
