Western Australian grain growers have harvested their largest ever crop.
ABC Rural
The harvest reached the 12.2 million tonne mark over the weekend, passing the 1999-2000 record of 12.1 million tonnes. Chief Executive Officer of the CBH Group Imre Mencshelyi says the harvest is only 84 per cent complete and he expects this season's total tonnage will be around the 15 million tonne mark. And he says the West Australian grain industry deserves a well-earned break. "I think that most people will be satisfied, perhaps some in the southern part of the state would have liked to have been a little more progressed in the harvest. I think there are some tired people in the organisation, they've done a tremendous job, I think there will be some tired farmers and some tired truck drivers as well and I think that they all deserve a very, very merry Christmas and a happy new year." Meanwhile grain growers in parts of Victoria will have an enforced Christmas break this year after heavy rain suspended harvest. Around 10 per cent of crops are still to be stripped in western Victoria, and farmers are now hoping the skies will clear after Christmas Day. But contract harvester Scott Hoffmann says the rain break is welcome after a hectic couple of months. "Gee when did we start? I think it was the first or second week in October, so it's ten weeks or so; we've got a few guys in the shed at the moment at home, we've got a few utes that need attention and some headers that need a few jobs doing to them, but I think it's just a bit wet to get out in the paddocks today but maybe tomorrow or Wednesday we'll get on top of those things. Basically we'll rest up a bit and hopefully get going because we've got a hell of a lot ahead of us. We've only just started south of Horsham, so we've got a lot to do."
