Rice Production in Chile
Executive Summary As a result of a significant fall in rice plantings in MY2004, a smaller total output is expected and imports will expand further to meet expanding domestic consumption

Production General
Rice plantings in Chile have varied between 25 and 30 thousand hectares during the last 4 years. Yields have varied depending on weather conditions during the growing season between 4.9 to 5.1 Metric Tons per Hectare. For MY2004 plantings fell significantly when compared to the previous year. Officials at the Ministry of Agriculture have indicated that, since there is not enough snow accumulation in the high mountains, there may not be sufficient water available for rice production, so farmers have reduced their plantings significantly.

Trade
Chile imports rice mainly from Thailand. Trade sources have indicated that Thailand’s lower prices are the main reason for buying Thai rice. Imports from Argentina and Uruguay correspond normally to higher quality rice (parboiled). Trade sources indicated that they are presently importing parboiled Thai rice for lower prices than the prices quoted from Argentina and Uruguay.
