Market prospects for Vietnamese rice in 2004
Vietnam Economic Times, 15th Dec 2003
According to Vietnamese Trade Ministry Deputy Director of the Ministry's Import-Export Department Nguyen Dang Chi, the export market for rice next year seems promising, but the export value would depend on domestic supplies.
Brazilian contract of 150,000 tonnes has brought the total amount of rice exports for delivery in 2004 up to approximately 700,000 tonnes.

The Government's likely adjustments to the current rice export regulations are also expected to facilitate rice export activities and give more autonomy to the Viet Nam Food Association (VFA). At the moment, those adjustments are being devised by the Ministry of Trade (MOT) before being submitted for Government approval.

MOT projected this year's rice exports to surpass the 4-million-ton mark. General Statistical Office figures show that by the end of November, the country had exported nearly 3.9 million tonnes of rice, turning over 729 million USD and making it the world's second largest rice exporter after Thailand.

The rice export market has expanded to 23 countries and territories although many other export staples saw their outlets dwindle.

Since Vietnamese rice's first appearance on the international market in 1989, the country has exported 40 million tonnes of rice, grossing over 8 billion USD and taking 12-15 percent of the world's rice market annually. The quality of Vietnamese rice has improved significantly over recent years.

MOT and VFA attributed these achievements to the Government's frequent adjustments to export policies which have helped Vietnamese rice secure an established footing in the international market.
