Rice exporters delay Vietnam meeting till 2004
Reuters
A meeting of the world's five leading rice exporters has been postponed to early next year because Thailand's new trade minister wanted time to settle in, Vietnamese officials said on Friday.

The meeting was scheduled to be held in Hanoi this week between Thailand, Vietnam, India, Pakistan and China which together account for 65 percent of the world's rice trade of around 26-27 million tonnes a year.

Wattana Muangsook, who was promoted to commerce minister earlier this month, would decide Thailand's grain and feedstuff policy for next year, traders said.

A Vietnam trade ministry official told Reuters the meeting was rescheduled for the first quarter next year but no date was fixed.

Officials have declined to disclose the agenda of the meeting. Last year trade ministers of the five countries agreed in Bangkok to set up a Council on Rice Trade Cooperation to stabilise volatile world prices.

Vietnam is expected to export around four million tonnes of rice this year.

Grain experts say Vietnam could overtake India to resume its rank as the world's second-largest rice exporter in 2003 after Thailand which ships six to seven million tonnes annually.
