Increased imports to Israel
During the last two years (2001/02 and 2002/03) sorghum consumption in Israel has fallen sharply for many years because of increased shipments of cheap feed wheat from the Black Sea Basin. In poultry ration in Israel, sorghum and feed wheat are used as substitute for yellow corn.

Recently, due to shortage of feed wheat in the Black Sea Basin, the Israeli buyers are shifting to American yellow corn, and to sorghum. Demand for white corn is also expected to develop in this market, as it does not change the color of poultry skin to yellow, which is not desired by Israeli consumers, and is better in protein and oil contents than sorghum. White corn is a new addition in use in poultry rations. Therefore only a trial shipment was imported during the month of July 2003. Its performances were considered satisfactory and the shipments are supposed to grow in the near future.

It is assumed that sorghum consumption in MY2003/04 will total 100,000 tons, all of it from the United States. White corn imports are forecast to grow to total between 30,000 and 40,000 tons, mainly from the U.S., but also possibly from South Africa. Yellow corn consumption will vary between 800 and 1,000 thousand tons, most of it from the United States.
