Rice exports increased by 2.9%
Despite a sharp contraction of Thai rice exports to African countries which are the largest Thai rice importers, Thailand’s rice exports from January – September increased by 2.9 percent to 5,261,804 million tons, of which 1,585,684 tons were fragrant rice. The increase mainly reflected a significant return of Thai rice exports (5% white rice) to South American countries, (major U.S. markets) in particular Chile and Brazil, due to the reportedly much cheaper prices for Thai rice - by about US$ 100 /ton compared to U.S. rice this year. Also, rice exports to Asian countries continued to increase by 14.1 percent, mainly exports to Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Hong Kong. Meanwhile rice exports to African and Middle East countries declined by 9.5 percent and 7.2 percent due mostly to the strong competition from cheaper Indian and Vietnam rice in the first half of the year.

According to the Department of Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce, Thailand’s rice exports during January – October 27, 2003 amounted to 5,864,904 tons, up slightly from 5,845,987 tons for the same period in 2002. Rice exports in CY 2003 has been revised downward from 7.5 million tons to the baseline scenario of 7.1 – 7.2 million tons, down slightly from the previous year’s exports of 7.25 million tons, down slightly from the previous year’s exports of 7.25 million tons, in response to strong competition from cheaper Indian and Vietnamese rice in the first half of the year. Trade sources reported that monthly rice exports for the rest of the year (November – December) will likely be around 560,000 tons, far below the 5-year average of around 700,000 tons, due mainly to the buyers’ concerns over the current high freight costs. Also, fresh demand is limited by the pending shipments as a result of heavy rain-triggered delay in loading activity a couple of months ago.
