Thailand weekly rice price update
Exports prices for most grades of rice declined slightly as exporters concerns over the Thai Baht fluctuation have subsided with the Baht more stable at around 40 Baht/US$.

Meanwhile, prices for fragrant rice continued to decline significantly in response to increasing supplies of new crop. However, Government has already announced the intervention program for paddy rice, starting November 1, 2003, until February 28, 2004. The intervention target is 9 million tons of paddy, unchanged from the previous year. The program covers 5 million tons of fragrant rice paddy, 3 million tons of white rice paddy, and 1 million tons of glutinous rice paddy. The program will pay 6,700 – 7,000 Baht/ton (roughly US$ 168 - 175 /ton) for fragrant rice paddy, up 200 Baht/ton (roughly US$ 5 /ton) from the previous crop year.

Meanwhile, the intervention prices for white rice paddy and glutinous paddy remained unchanged from the previous year as follows: 5,330 Baht/ton (US$ 133 /ton) for 100% grade paddy; 5,235 Baht/ton (US$ 131 /ton) for 5% grade paddy; 5,045 Baht/ton (US$ 126/ton) for 10% grade paddy; 4,950 Baht/ton (US$ 124 /ton) for 15% grade paddy; 4,760 Baht/ton (US$ 119 /ton) for 25% grade paddy; and 5,900 Baht/ton (US$ 148 /ton) for 10% grade glutinous rice paddy.

Unofficial exports for October 20-26, 2003 totaled 132,548 tons, up 12,541 tons from the previous week’s total and up 31,201 tons from the four-week moving average of 101,347 tons. Exports during Jan 1- Oct 26, 2003, totaled 4,059,926 tons, compared with 4,909,350 tons (including fragrant rice) during the same period in 2002.

According to the Department of Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce, total rice exports (including fragrant rice) during Jan 1 – Oct 13, 2003 amounted to 5,543,026 million tons, up 1.7 percent from the same period in 2002.
