U.S. rice group sets sights on Iraq
The American rice industry wants preferential treatment in Iraq’s rice market based on the United States’ role in that country.

But, six months after the ground war in Iraq ended, it is not at all clear the industry is pressing its case with the right people. No real market that exporters can tap into has developed, leading the U.S. A. Rice Federation to plead its case with the United Nations’ World Food Program, the group overseeing food distribution in Iraq.

Before the Persian Gulf War in 1991, Iraq bought about 500,000 metric tons of rice from the United States a year (a metric ton is 2,205 pounds).

Since the most recent war began, American rice millers and growers have talked about being able to tap into that market, one that has become dominated by other exporters, such as Vietnam. American rice has made up a substantial part of food-aid shipments to Iraq since the war, in part to help gain a toehold in its eventual commercial market.

The possibility of a major new export market for American rice is particularly tantalizing in Arkansas, which produces almost half of all the rice grown in the United States. Last year the state grew 4.4 million metric tons of rice worth $348.3 million.
