Wheat prices increase 5.55%
Daily Times
The price of wheat has started to shoot up in the market because of the reluctance of traders to buy wheat provided by the government. On Monday, wheat price increased 5.55 percent to Rs 950 per 100 kg bag.

“The government is providing inferior quality wheat to traders at Rs 850 per 100 kg bag, which the traders are not willing to buy,” said Sheikh Akhtar Hussain, spokesman, Pakistan Flour Mills Association. “No trader has lifted even a single bag of government wheat due to its poor quality.”
Mr Hussain said that the traders are compelled to buy wheat from open market, thus the prices have started to rise. In a single day, the price of wheat increased Rs 50 per 100 kg bag to Rs 950. He added that despite an increase of 5.55 percent in price, wheat is not being provided, as the wheat traders want to increase the rates further.
“The government is selling mixed wheat, which is not good in quality,” Mr Hussain said. A bag of 100 kg has 40 percent wheat of new crop and 60 percent of old crop. The prices of government wheat are in the range of Rs 827 and Rs 850 per 100 kg bag.
Meanwhile, flour prices have also gone up due to the increase in wheat prices. The price of second quality flour has increased 4.65 percent to Rs 900 per 100 kg bag. “The flour mills have increased flour prices and are not supplying flour at the previous rates,” said Fareed Qureshi, president, Karachi Retail Grocers Group. Prices of fine quality flour increased 5.55 percent to Rs 950 per 100 kg bag.
The prices of other essential commodities have also risen. Chilli prices rose 50 percent to Rs 75 per 40 kg on Monday. “The wholesale traders have started profiteering are not supplying commodities at reasonable rates,” Mr Qureshi said. A meeting will be held Wednesday between officials of the city government and traders for stabilising prices during Ramadhan. “The wholesale traders are increasing prices before the meeting,” he said.
The prices of coriander rose 36 percent to Rs 75 per kg on Monday. Its previous price was Rs 55 in last week.
