Egypt's main official wheat buyer said on Saturday he had cancelled a tender to buy wheat for December 5-15 shipment, but did not give a reason. "We cancelled the tender,"Mahmoud Abdel-Hamid, vice-chairman of the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC), told Reuters, but declined to elaborate. GASC had said on Friday it was seeking offers of 30,000, 40,000 or 60,000 tonnes of U.S. soft red winter, soft white and/or hard red wheat, French milling wheat, Australian standard white and/or Syrian soft red wheat for shipment period December 5-15 with cargo size to be at GASC's option. Egypt, one of the world's biggest wheat importers, purchases up to seven million tonnes of wheat from abroad each year and traditionally prefers U.S. grain. Since the start of the marketing year which began in June, GASC has bought 1,795,000 tonnes of wheat, of which 1,195,000 tonnes have been U.S. wheat and 600,000 tonnes have been Australian. Last year, Egypt turned to France for much of its wheat needs when drought pushed U.S. prices sky-high. But this year drought is hurting Europe, while the United States, Canada and Australia have all seen production recover. GASC most recently bought wheat on October 7, choosing 240,000 tonnes of Australian grain and saying the prices offered were the most competitive.
