European Commission approves plan to improve Caribbean's rice industry
EU Business, UK
The European Commission approved 24 million euros to improve the Caribbean's rice industry, Guyana's Foreign Trade Minister Clement Rohee said Saturday. Rohee said Guyana was allocated 11.7 million euros and Suriname 9.3 million euros, with the rest going to other Caribbean countries. Even as rice prices in the guaranteed European Union (EU) market are about to fall, the Caribbean's only two rice producers-exporters are worried about cheaper and larger volumes of the grain mainly from Thailand and Vietnam infiltrating the Caribbean. Rohee said Guyana planned to spend the funds on "range of activities," including more credit facilities, research into new markets and products, and improving field drainage and irrigation. "The long awaited approval of the funds by the European Commission is an extremely positive step for the rice industry in Guyana at a time when its future in the global trading environment is extremely vulnerable," Rohee told reporters. In an effort to survive, Guyana's rice marketers have already started selling the grain to non-traditional rice markets like Colombia, Haiti and Brazil during the past several months.
