CBOT Rough Rice Ends up firm on speculative buying
- Chicago Board of Trade rough rice futures ended higher on Monday as local and speculative buying outweighed commercial selling, traders said. CBOT rice futures ended up 1/2 cent to 4 cents per hundredweight, with November up 1-1/2 cents at $7.47 and January up 1/2 cent at $7.63.
"We hit early highs on local short covering and speculative buying, with stops hit above the $7.50 level in November," one CBOT trader said. "Commercial sales above the $7.50 level pushed the market lower, but we then attracted some scale-down buying below the $7.40 level in November." He and other CBOT traders said Monday's weekly U.S. rice export sales data were supportive. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported on Monday that net U.S. rice export sales for the week ended Sept. 11 totaled 62,800 tonnes. The sales were 3 percent below the week earlier, but 19 percent above the previous four-week average. The major buyers were Mexico (22,700 tonnes), El Salvador (19,600 tonnes), Brazil (12,500 tonnes), and Haiti (7,700 tonnes). Moreover, CBOT traders noted that the Philippines had extended the deadline of a tender to buy up to 150,000 tonnes of U.S. long grain milled rice with PL-480 Title I financing due to last week's storm. The deadline was extended to Monday, Sept. 22, from Sept. 17, a USDA official said on Monday. The U.S. rice harvest moved forward, with the USDA reporting 58 percent of the total U.S. rice crop had been harvested as of Sunday, matching the five-year average and up from the previous week's 41 percent. Top producer Arkansas was 58 percent harvested as of Sunday, the USDA said. There were 17 deliveries posted by a customer of Man Financial on Monday against expired CBOT September rough rice. A customer of Goldenberg Hehmeyer stopped all 17 lots. The last day assigned, or the date of the oldest long holder delivered against, was Aug. 28. CBOT rough rice volume on Monday was estimated at 478 futures, compared with Friday's 400 contracts. Estimated option volume was 90 lots.
