India needed to cultivate more of traditional varieties of aromatic rice, other than basmati for exports.
Financial Express
India needed to cultivate more of traditional varieties of aromatic rice, other than basmati for exports. There has been a growing demand for scented varieties of rice in the global market, said the director-general of the Manila based International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Dr Ronald P Cantrell.

Dr Cantrell who is presently in India for reviewing various research activities on rice undertaken in the country in collaboration with IRRI said, there was a need to identify different varieties of traditional aromatic rice and the process of selection should also involve genetic purification of the crop.

He said that this activity should be undertaken in each and every region of the country. Also, he said, there was need for policy reform to promote the traditional non-basmati aromatic varieties so that the farmers could get remunerative prices in the global market.
He regretted that due to scant attention, Basmati 370, which had more parental lines of traditional basmati was slowly going out of global trade and India was selling more of developed basmati varieties which had less number of parental lines of traditional basmati.
